Waking up to coffee that's already brewed is the small luxury most people think they need a $600 Wi-Fi machine for. Usually they don't. If your coffee maker has a physical on/off switch, a Matter or HomeKit smart plug turns it into a scheduled, Apple Home–controlled machine for under $30.

The one catch: a smart plug only restores power — it can't press a button. It works with brewers that have a mechanical switch which stays "on" and simply resumes when power returns (most basic drip machines). It does not work with machines that need a button press or sit in a standby state: Keurig, Nespresso and nearly all espresso machines won't switch on this way.

Which coffee makers work with a smart plug

Machine typeWorks with a smart plug? Why
Basic drip / batch brewerYesMechanical switch stays on; resumes on power
Drip maker with digital displayMaybeSome reset to standby — test it
Keurig / pod machineNoNeeds a button press after power up
Espresso machineNoElectronic control + boiler warm-up

Quick test: plug the machine into the smart plug, switch the machine on, cut power at the plug and restore it. If it starts brewing again, you're good.

The smart plugs to buy (Apple Home & Matter)

Pick a Matter or HomeKit plug so it appears natively in Apple Home — then you can schedule it, add it to scenes and control it with Siri. (A plain Wi-Fi plug with its own app works too, but then you're back to a second app.)

HomeKit Smart Plug Mini P125

Best budget HomeKit
  • HomeKit · 15A / 1,800W
  • 2-pack · no hub needed

A budget HomeKit plug that pairs straight to Apple Home. Fine for a drip brewer; just confirm it's rated above your machine's wattage.

Verify before you buy: not every plug that says "smart" works with Apple Home. We keep a source-backed compatibility list of smart plugs (HomeKit + Matter, with ratings) here: smart plugs that work with Apple Home →.

Setup: schedule coffee in Apple Home (5 minutes)

  1. Plug the smart plug into the wall, the coffee maker into the plug, and switch the coffee maker's own switch on (leave it on).
  2. Add the plug to the Home app (scan its Matter/HomeKit code).
  3. Name it something clear — e.g. "Coffee Maker" and assign it to the kitchen.
  4. In Home → Automation → At a time → e.g. 6:30 → turn on the plug. (You need a home hub — HomePod or Apple TV — for time automations.)
  5. Optional: a second automation to switch it off 30 minutes later.

Safety & wattage

Drip brewers draw roughly 900–1,500W; a standard 15A / 1,800W plug covers them. Don't use a plug rated below the machine's wattage, and don't leave a machine in a state where a dry/pre-filled basket is a fire risk. Espresso machines with large boilers draw more — check the rating or skip the plug.

FAQ

Can a smart plug turn on my coffee maker?

Only if the machine's switch stays on and it resumes when power is applied — typical of simple drip brewers, not Keurig or espresso machines.

Does a smart plug work with Apple Home?

Yes — pick a Matter or HomeKit plug. Both appear in Apple Home for scheduling and Siri.

Are smart plugs safe with a coffee maker?

For drip brewers, a 15A/1,800W plug is fine. Check the wattage; never under-rate the plug.

Best smart plug for a coffee maker?

Eve Energy (Matter/Thread) for Apple Home purists; Linkind Matter or the HomeKit P125 for budget.

Bottom line: a $20–30 smart plug + a basic drip brewer = scheduled coffee in Apple Home. No Wi-Fi coffee machine required. Just remember the one catch — it can't press a button, so it won't work with Keurig or espresso machines.
