Most coffee-gear roundups are rewarmed product pages. We do it the other way around: we look at what thousands of real owners report after months of daily use, compare it against published specifications, and rank machines on the things that actually decide whether you regret the purchase.
Our data sources
- Verified owner reviews — we aggregate ratings and long-term reports from large volumes of verified buyers (Amazon), not a handful of cherry-picked quotes.
- Owner discussion — recurring themes from espresso and home-barista communities (e.g. r/espresso) on what breaks, what leaks, and what owners would buy again.
- Published specifications — boiler type, pump pressure, brew-temperature stability, portafilter size, steam power, tank capacity, noise and power draw from manufacturers.
- Published guidance — for extraction and water topics we cross-reference established sources (e.g. SCA guidance) rather than inventing claims.
No sponsored picks
We take no payment from brands to feature or rank a product. There are no paid placements and no sponsored tests. If we recommend a machine, it is because the data says so — not because someone paid for it.
We do earn a standard Amazon affiliate commission when you buy through our links. That commission is identical regardless of which machine you pick, so it cannot influence the ranking. It is disclosed on every page.
How we rank
- Category-specific criteria. A grinder doesn't fail the way a milk frother does, so we score each category on the factors that actually matter for it (e.g. for espresso machines: temperature stability, steam recovery, build quality, maintenance, value).
- Consensus over outliers. A finding only shapes a recommendation when it shows up consistently across reviews and discussion — not from a single dramatic post.
- One winner per budget. Instead of a 50-machine list, each guide names the machine we'd actually buy at a given price point — and says what you give up by choosing it.
- Total cost, not sticker price. Where relevant we show the real cost of ownership (descaler, filters, baskets, replacement gaskets) over time.
Flaws are part of the review
Every guide publishes the negatives. If a popular machine has a recurring failure pattern, hidden cost or design flaw, that goes in the article — in plain language, not buried at the bottom. A review that only lists upsides isn't useful to you.
Updates
Guides are updated as new data arrives: new machines get added, and recommendations get retired when the evidence changes. Each article shows when it was last updated.
What we don't do (honest limits)
- We do not claim to have physically tested every machine ourselves. Our rankings are built from aggregated owner data and published specifications.
- We do not present a fabricated "expert" persona. This site is written and maintained by the LimeCrema editorial team.
- We do not invent measurements. Where a number is unknown, we say so.
